My numbers are roughly the same from last year here in central Iowa. No decrease, but no expansion. I'm also hoping for a better next year.

If you do a google video search for "Yards for Purple Martin", you will find an excellent informative video covering all aspects of martins. I suggest that every take the time to listen to and watch Perry Vogel in this wonderful video. Nice work Perry.

Sorry about the delayed response. My website is slow this time of year in the forum with everyone watching over their colonies. My numbers were good from last year. This year I had 97% fledge rate. 218 babies, 7 deaths from natural causes, one wing entrapment out of a total of 318 martins, 50 nestin...

Here in central Iowa I have a newbie, who happens to be the Polk county conservation office and member of my organization start a new public martin site. He had a few lookers but no takers this year. Other than that, I try to get new people interested in martins with a mentor program. So far, so good.

Owl cages can be installed around the entire gourd rack or metal housing for owl troubles. For hawk troubles, many landlords add decoy martins around their colony.

I also use the starling elevator trap. They are great for catching large numbers of starlings.
