Meet our Directors


Perry D. Vogel, Director

Perry D. Vogel serves as a volunteer executive director of the Purple Martin Association of the Dakotas. He founded the organization and has directed its operations, overseeing volunteer programs and guiding strategic initiatives that support the conservation of Purple Martins.

In his role, Perry has implemented program evaluation metrics to track nesting success, volunteer engagement, and resource allocation—improving outcomes year after year. He has built and maintained partnerships with local organizations, schools, and community stakeholders to expand the association’s impact, while also representing the group publicly through educational presentations that highlight the environmental importance of Purple Martins.

As a board officer, Perry contributes to governance, long-term planning, and strategic decision-making. His leadership, dedication, and decades of experience in communication and outreach make him an invaluable member of the team.


Paul W. Mammenga, Director

Paul W. Mammenga serves as a volunteer research director for the Purple Martin Association of the Dakotas. He is an accomplished waterfowl biologist with the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks.

In his role, Paul conducts vital research by banding Purple Martins for a natal dispersal study, providing insights into the birds' dispersal patterns from their home colonies. He also utilizes specialized geolocator tracking devices to enhance our understanding of their migration.

Paul holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Management and Biology from South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD. With over 45 years of scientific experience, his expertise significantly contributes to the organization's mission and objectives.


Carol M. Stotler, Officer

Carol M. Stotler serves as a volunteer officer with the Purple Martin Association of the Dakotas. Based in Larimore, North Dakota, she has dedicated more than two decades to supporting Purple Martin conservation through habitat development, education, and community engagement.

In her role, Carol manages and maintains advanced housing systems for Purple Martins, implementing best practices to ensure safe, sustainable nesting environments. She shares her knowledge of effective housing design, predator management, and monitoring techniques with fellow landlords and community members, fostering broader awareness and stewardship.

With over 21 years of experience, Carol has become a respected resource for conservation education in her community and across the Dakotas. Her commitment to advancing the association’s mission and mentoring others in Purple Martin conservation makes her a valued leader within the organization.
